Perhaps best known as the car of choice for 007 James Bond, Aston Martin began more than a century ago when auto entrepreneurs Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin enjoyed success in the Aston Hill hillclimb competitions and the company took its name from the first part of the course’s and the second of Lionel’s.

Since 1913 its race cars have won some of the toughest events in the world including the Le Mans 24 Hours, both in the 1950s and again in the contemporary scene, and its road cars have been bought by film stars, rock stars, kings and presidents. Managing to survive various financial crises and passing through several ownerships over the years, Aston Martin is now in a strong position financially, well capitalised, and is in the middle of a complete overhaul of its models with seven being launched in seven years. 

It is soon to join rivals such as Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Porsche in the luxury SUV market when it makes its first off-roader, the DBX, at a new facility at a former RAF base, St. Athans in south Wales. It will also compete against Porsche in making its first all-electric car from 2019. Underlining its engineering strength and links to contemporary motor racing, Aston Martin is successful in international GT racing and thanks to its association with the Red Bull Formula One team, it has the Valkyrie hypercar which has been designed by some of that operations’ aerodynamicists. The V12 hybrid is effectively a Grand Prix car for the road and will take its place among the very fastest road cars yet built.
