About Aston Martin

Perhaps best known as the car of choice for 007 James Bond, Aston Martin began more than a century ago when auto entrepreneurs Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin enjoyed success in the Aston Hill hillclimb competitions and the company took its name from the first part of the course’s and the second of Lionel’s.

Since 1913 its race cars have won some of the toughest events in the world including the Le Mans 24 Hours, both in the 1950s and again in the contemporary scene, and its road cars have been bought by film stars, rock stars, kings and presidents. Managing to survive various financial crises and passing through several ownerships over the years, Aston Martin is now in a strong position financially, well capitalised, and is in the middle of a complete overhaul of its models with seven being launched in seven years.

It is soon to join rivals such as Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Porsche in the luxury SUV market when it makes its first off-roader, the DBX, at a new facility at a former RAF base, St. Athans in south Wales. It will also compete against Porsche in making its first all-electric car from 2019. Underlining its engineering strength and links to contemporary motor racing, Aston Martin is successful in international GT racing and thanks to its association with the Red Bull Formula One team, it has the Valkyrie hypercar which has been designed by some of that operations’ aerodynamicists. The V12 hybrid is effectively a Grand Prix car for the road and will take its place among the very fastest road cars yet built.

Popular Aston Martin Cars

DB11

Arguably the foundation of the company’s current sales and financial success, the DB11 was first seen in 2016 with a 600 bhp V12 engine but the range was extended in early 2018 with a 510 bhp V8, both of them twin-turbo, and it is the newer car which many road testers say is the better drive, making up for in agility what it gives away in peak power. There is a DB11 AMR version (Aston Martin Racing) which has 630 bhp and a top speed of 207 mph, and open topped Volante models too. Aston Martin has turned to Bridgestone for the rubber and all DB11 versions run on its 255/40 ZR20 tyres at the front and 295/35 ZR20 at the back.

DBS Superleggera

With 715 bhp being produced by its 5.2 litre twin turbocharged V12 the hand-built DBS Superleggera is the most powerful production Aston Martin yet and undoubtedly one of the world’s finest ultra high speed, luxury GT cars. The `Superleggera’ tag is a reference to the Italian term `super light’, a construction method used for decades by coachbuilders for the very finest motor cars. For its flagship model, Aston Martin has entrusted Pirelli with the task of providing tyres capable of handling its enormous power. The DBS Superleggera has Pirelli P Zero 265/35 R21s at the front and P Zero 305/30 R21s at the back.

Vantage

Wearing one of the company’s most famous nameplates, the new Vantage is a luxury sports car and the entry price point to Aston Martin ownership with a starting price of around £120,000. The 4.0 V8 coupe uses Pirelli P Zero, a tread favoured by so many supercar makers, with 255/40 R20 at the front and 295/35 R20 for the back which transmit the power to the road.

Vanquish S

Available as either a coupe or convertible, the Vanquish S is a relatively roomy – relative by the standards of its class! – grand tourer. It is luxurious as well as high performance with its 6.0 V12 engine, capable of just breaking the 200 mph mark. Every external body panel is crafted from carbonfibre, making it light but strong, and emphasising the Aston Martin’s uncompromising approach to the finest engineering. It rides on 20 inch wheels and Pirelli P Zero tyres, 255/35 at the front and 305/30 at the back.

Rapide S

The Rapide S is a four door GT which shares the 6.0 V12 engine found elsewhere in the Aston Martin range. Its hand crafted interior is every inch as luxurious as a customer paying from around £150,000 would expect. Bridgestone were selected to supply the rubber and the Rapide S uses its Potenza range, with 245/40 R20 at the front and 295/35 R20 for the back wheels.
